How to create a video tutorial with free software?

If you want to create a tutorial about any topic that you can find on the Internet, here is a quick tip on how to do it, if you don’t want to buy new software.

First of all, let me explain what screen capture is. It is in the name: it is an application that captures your screen, and you can create a video of what you see and record your voice to narrate what is happening on the screen.

There is a free screen capture software that you can download from TechSmith, it is called Jing and here is the link: http://www.techsmith.com/jing/ This is the basic version of the software with very few options, but it does work.

Jing renders into a *.swf Flash file only. You can't upload this type of file to YouTube, but you can create a free account at www.ScreenCast.com . You can embed your videos from ScreenCast to your your websites.

I recommend that you choose the size of your recording very carefully. Your web site will look more high tech if you use a wide screen format. The aspect ratio of a wide screen video is 16:9. It means that the width is 16 units and the height is 9 units. Older TV screens had a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Here are some measurements (in pixels) you can use: (you can click on any of these to see the actual size in a new window)

560x314;

720x405;

800x450;

1000x562;

1240x698

Here is the actual tutorial I recorded in the main video:
